About the Project

The Graham Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Graham name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Graham name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (Scotland Grahams), by time period (18th Century Grahams), or by topic (Graham DNA, Graham Occupations, Graham Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Categories

As this project grows categorizing profiles will be an important part of helping us stay organized. Please check the Graham Name Study Category page to see if a category exists. If a category does not exist for something you would like to track then feel free to create it. See Help:Category Creation and Removal

Head of Line

A sub-category named Category:Head of Line, Graham Name Study has been added to collect the earliest known ancestor in each line that is posted on WikiTree. You can help by adding these folks to the name study as you run across them OR removing this category from their profile when a parent is found. Then put this category on the newly found parent.

Locations

New category names should strive to be short and unique. That usually means it should follow the pattern "<country, state or providence>, Graham Name Study" or "<city or town>,<state or providence>, Graham Name Study". Australia, Ireland, USA, Canada, New Zealand, England and Scotland are already set up. The category should list it's parent category so that they roll up into each-other and we end up with a hierarchy like the following:

  • Categories
    • Family
      • One Name Studies
        • Graham Name Study
          • USA, Graham Name Study
            • North Carolina, Graham Name Study
              • Rowan, North Carolina, Graham Name Study

Specific Record Collections

Specific record collection categories should roll up under the location in which they apply. See Category: 1850 US Census, South Carolina, Graham Name Study

One Name Study Sticker

There are two variations of the One Name Study Sticker that can be used on profiles that are included in a One Name Study.

To add this sticker to a profile included in the ONS, place the sticker code (see examples below) anywhere in the biography part of the profile. Usually you should put it next to the text describing the Sticker, but it should always be below the == Biography == heading and above the == Sources == heading.

Hi, I have become a member because DNA testing revealed that my paternal surname was Graham before it was Johnson and discovered the genetic signature of my Graham family.

My paternal lineage traces back to the Border Reiver Grahams AKA Grahams of Netherby, Grahams of Brackenhill, & Grahams of Esk. Border Reivers were raiders along the Anglo-Scottish border from the late 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century. They included both Scottish and English people, and they raided the entire border country without regard to their victims' nationality.

Mary Ann Graham and Robert/Simon Henry left Ireland for Canada in 1838. Any additional info greatly appreciated. She was apparently connected in some way to the Graham family of Montrose.

Category:Co._Londonderry,_Ireland,_Graham_Name_Study and Category:Co._Londonderry,_Graham_Name_Study should be merged perhaps?

Here is some info about a line of Grahams associated with Sixtowns and earlier Magherafelt , Thomas Graham (bef.1745-)

I am a descendant of Robert Graham and Isabella Wilson. Both were from Drumquin in County Tyrone. Robert was born in 1800, Isabella in 1801. I'd like to participate in the name study and add these two individuals. Both are dead ends for me.

My Grahams originally came into Paxtong, Philadephia direct from Scotland. The sons came befor their dad in the 1710 period and their father James Graham somehow joins them abt 1744 in Rowan County, NC and move into Mecklenburg, NC then York County, SC . I just enter Ancestry to work on where he came from and I looked at matching dna and my computer wandered its way from the idea I had of linking them to Christian Leslie who married into the Graham family and it just took over like it had its own mind. Now I am stalled in Maryland wondering how did I connect here. Does ancestry have some kind of new program to use dna to connect? I feel like I am as my grandson said tripping".I am 74 year old great grandmother. Any comments? I decided to come to Wiki a few months ago.

For some reason Ancestry took some information from me and is pulling me from Williamsburg County, SC to a community called Arbutus near Baltimore, Maryland. It took me to William Graham of Williamsburg to this area. Are any of you working on any Grahams in Baltimore or Williamsburg ?

I realize my response is very much delayed, and hope you have heard from others. I am a direct descendant of William “Hog” Graham (1740-1779) of Williamsburg County, SC.

My maternal GG Grandfather, Alexander Newton Graham, showed up in north east Texas, Red River county, in 1836, he was joined by sister an 3 brothers (Lucinda, Robert and James) a born abt 1812+/-. We have been looking for their family many years, er THINK they came from Kentucky.

I have taken a couple of DNA test working on this issue.
